This article looks at Dynapoz metakaolin provided by R-E-D, what separates it from similar products, and how you can rely on this material to meet sustainability and performance goals in endless concrete applications.
What is Dynapoz Metakaolin?
Dynapoz metakaolin is an ultra-fine material that is produced from naturally occurring alumino-silicate mineral kaolin, also known as kaolin clay. This clay mineral is heated to a specific temperature range, typically between 1202°F (650°C) and 1382°F (750°C), to calcinate or dehydrate the kaolin and convert it to a highly reactive pozzolanic material known as metakaolin. By removing the naturally occurring moisture from the clay, the remaining metakaolin becomes more reactive with the calcium hydroxide present in concrete and thus produces a stronger and more durable final product. Furthermore, metakaolin provides exceptional levels of resistance to chlorides and sulfides and features low permeability that prevents moisture from creating havoc during the freeze and thaw cycles present in outdoor applications. Under the ASTM C618, there are three separate classes of pozzolans Class F, Class C, and Class N. Metakaolin’s status as a Class N pozzolan means that it is a naturally derived pozzolan that requires additional processing to achieve the required particle fineness for use with concrete.
Comparing Metakaolin to Other SCMs for Sale
There are many different supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) available on the market and through R-E-D Industrial Products. These materials are used in concrete applications to partially replace an amount of Portland cement that carries with it a higher environmental impact (Read our recent article on Environmental Product Declarations) and lower level of performance in certain conditions. While there are some naturally occurring pozzolanic SCMs like pyroclastic rocks, volcanic glass, and kaolin clay, the vast majority of SCMs are by-products of another industry repurposed for use in concrete. Unlike these by-products, metakaolin is a specifically manufactured additive for use in concrete applications that require greater strength and durability.
Other Examples of SCMs Compared to Metakaolin
Fly Ash: Fly ash is a result of the combustion of pulverized coal in power plants that is accumulated and used as an SCM for concrete. Fly ash typically has a larger particle size than metakaolin which can inhibit the level of surface area for chemical reactions to occur. Both contain silica and alumina, however, metakaolin typically maintains a more consistent and larger concentration.
Silica Fume: Silica fume is another byproduct that occurs during the production of silicon and provides considerable benefits as a supplementary cementitious material. Due to the smaller particle size when compared to metakaolin, the addition of silica fume offers faster reaction times and a strengthening boost during the early stages of curing. Adding silica fume does decrease the amount of workability compared to the use of metakaolin, which in turn requires less water.
GGBFS Slag: While ground granulated blast furnace slag is also an SCM, it has several distinct differences from metakaolin starting with the chemical composition. Metakaolin is primarily silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3) whereas blast furnace slag contains calcium oxide (CaO) in addition to the other two. The presence of calcium oxide slows the reactivity of slag, making metakaolin more suitable for applications that require early strength development. Slag may be more beneficial for late-term strength development as well as applications that require enhanced electrical resistance or exposure to harsh elements like chloride.
