What is Concrete Fiber Reinforcement?

Concrete fiber reinforcement involves incorporating small, discrete fibers into the concrete matrix to enhance performance and durability. Fibers help control both plastic and hardened shrinkage cracking, improve impact and abrasion resistance, and increase the toughness of the finished concrete. In many applications, fibers can replace traditional wire mesh and rebar, simplifying placement and reducing labor. They are particularly effective in marine environments, providing superior resistance to corrosion and harsh conditions, and in shotcrete applications, where fibers improve pumpability, reduce rebound, and enhance overall toughness. By distributing stresses evenly throughout the concrete, fiber reinforcement extends service life and reduces maintenance for more durable, longer-lasting structures.

Three Types of Concrete Fiber Reinforcement

R-E-D Industrial Products is a supplier of acrylic micro fibers, synthetic macro fibers, and basalt fibers. When added to concrete, these fibers enhance the toughness, durability, and crack resistance optimizing the performance of concrete. More information on each type can be found below.

Acrylic Micro Fibers:

Adding acrylic micro fibers to concrete is a simple, cost-effective way to prevent early-stage cracking and improve durability. They control plastic shrinkage cracks, reduce surface bleeding and segregation, and enhance wear resistance, resulting in a smoother, longer-lasting surface. By minimizing micro-cracks and surface damage, acrylic micro fibers reduce maintenance, extend the life of the concrete, and help ensure a high-quality finish for both decorative and structural applications.

Synthetic Macro Fibers:

Adding synthetic macro fibers to concrete provides three-dimensional reinforcement that improves toughness, impact resistance, and long-term crack control. These fibers improve fatigue resistance, impact resistance, and can reduce curling thus minimizing the risk of large cracks forming over time. By distributing stress more evenly throughout the material, synthetic macro fibers can enhance the durability of slabs, pavements, and industrial floors, often reducing or replacing the need for traditional steel reinforcement in certain applications. They also simplify construction and lower labor costs while extending the service life of concrete applications.

Basalt Fibers:

Adding basalt fibers to concrete significantly enhances its toughness, durability, and resistance to harsh environments. These fibers improve tensile strength, reduce cracking, and increase the material’s resistance to abrasion, corrosion, and chemical attack. Basalt fibers are especially valuable in marine and aggressive environments, freeze-thaw cycles, and other corrosive conditions. By reinforcing the concrete at a microscopic level, basalt fibers extend service life, reduce maintenance, and provide a cost-effective way to create longer-lasting, high-performance applications.

What Are the Applications of Concrete Fiber Reinforcement?

R-E-D Industrial Products' three core fiber reinforcement products span a large range of applications.  Our team is incredibly knowledgeable and ready to discuss and help you with your specific fiber reinforcement needs to make your project successful.

Available in 6mm, 18mm and specialty lengths upon request, R-E-D's acrylic micro fibers enhance performance and durability, are alkali resistant & non-corrosive,  improved impact resistance, insoluable in water, finish easily with no fiber protrusion, are easy to mix and do not require any special equipment making them an excellent choice for small and large scale projects.  Typical applications include precast concrete, shotcrete, stucco, slab-on-grade, and decorative concrete.

Available in standard 54mm lengths (other lengths available upon request), R-E-D's synthetic macro fibers offer exceptional durability without the risk of corrosion, magnetism or alkali reaction.  A high volume of fibers in the concrete matrix creates effective three-dimensional reinforcement significantly reducing shrinkage, and cracking. Typical applications include precast concrete, shotcrete, slab-on-grade, slab-on-deck, industrial/residential & architectural applications as well as concrete pavements.

(Available in 43mm lengths, basalt fibers are engineered to provide high post-cracking strength to concrete while at the same time increasing toughness, impact and fatigue resistance of concrete. They can be used as temperature and shrinkage reinforcement since the fibers disperse quickly and evenly throughout the concrete matrix.  Typical applications include wall panels, pipes, water tanks, tunnel segments, marine structures and raft foundations.
